The rate he had was 0,6 g/l (legal limit is 0,2) and this could easily cost him:
- 1,5 years without driving
- 1,5 monthly salary before taxes
- a new driving test after the period without license
With this it does not mean than in Portugal it is not strict, but no just so much, neither at such a big expense. But the limits around here are much tighter.
So for this infraction what would happen in Portugal (limit is 0,5g/l):
- loosing driving license from 1 to 12 months.. with 0,6g/l probably 1 month..
- a fine from 250€ to 1250€, so probably 250...
... and taking into consideration that this was his first time, probably beside the fine in Portugal he would only get a probation for 12 months but could drive.
It might look like a bit exaggerated in Norway compared with Portugal, but now let's look at the facts...
Data from Wikipedia and WHO - World health Organization data from 2013
Deaths per 100.000 inhabitants / year:
Norway 2.2
Portugal 7.8
Total Deaths in 2013 (Portugal has the double of inhabitants)
Norway 112
Portugal 828
..... The deaths per inhabitant is almost 4 times in Portugal...
My conclusion, the strict laws work... for everyone benefit...
Portugal, please learn.... On a country that deaths and accidents are increasing instead of decreasing, stronger punishment needs to be the way to go so that people don't abuse the law.
.... Portugal Please learn!!!
PS: To you David Sampaio, all the best!!
